What is Reiki? (Energy Healing, Chakras & Holistic Wellness)

Reiki is a gentle, non-invasive form of energy healing therapy that promotes balance in the body, mind, and spirit. It is a form of holistic wellness practice that works with the body’s natural energy field to support relaxation, stress reduction, and emotional well-being.

The word Reiki comes from Japanese origins: “Rei” meaning universal or spiritual wisdom, and “Ki” meaning life force energy. This is often referred to as universal life energy, which is believed to flow through all living beings and influence overall health and vitality.

When this energy flows freely, individuals often feel grounded, calm, and emotionally balanced. Reiki is delivered through a trained Reiki practitioner who acts as a channel for universal life force energy. The practitioner does not diagnose or manipulate the body, but instead allows energy to flow where it is most needed.

A typical Reiki session involves light touch or hands held just above the body in a calm, supportive environment. This process activates the body’s natural relaxation response and encourages deep rest, emotional release, and energetic rebalancing.

During your session

​Each session is a quiet, supportive experience designed to help you fully relax and receive.

You will remain fully clothed and lie comfortably on a treatment table. Soft music may be playing, and the environment is intentionally calm and grounding. ​Hands are gently placed on or just above the body, depending on your comfort, allowing energy to flow naturally.

 

You may experience:

  • Deep relaxation or a meditative state

  • Warmth, tingling, or gentle sensations

  • Emotional release or a sense of lightness

  • Visuals, thoughts, or intuitive impressions

  • Falling asleep during the session

  • A feeling of calm, clarity, or reset afterward

  • Chills or goosebumps

  • Releasing and twitching 

Every session is unique, and there is no right or wrong way to experience Reiki.

After your session

Reiki continues to work beyond the session as your body integrates the energy.

 

You may notice:

  • Increased relaxation or sleepiness

  • Emotional processing or release

  • Greater clarity or calm

  • A need for rest or quiet

  • Feeling more grounded or centered

 

Aftercare Suggestions:

  • Drink plenty of water

  • Allow yourself time to rest if needed

  • Be gentle with yourself as your body integrates

  • Support yourself with self care...walk outside, sea salt bath, herbal tea

Do I need to believe in Reiki for it to work?

No. Reiki works with your body’s natural energy system. Belief isn’t required, openness is enough.

What should I wear?

Wear comfortable clothing. You will remain fully clothed during the session.

Will I feel anything?

Some people feel sensations, emotions, or deep relaxation. Others feel very subtle shifts. Every experience is valid. We suggest letting go of expectations and simply letting your first session unfold as it is meant too. 

How many sessions will I need?

This varies for each person. Some come occasionally, while others benefit from more regular sessions depending on their needs. You can discuss your needs with your practitioner when you are here for your session and decide what is best for you.

Can Reiki replace medical treatment or therapy?

Reiki is a complementary wellness practice and should not be considered a substitute for medical care, diagnosis, or therapy. It is designed to support overall wellbeing and may be used in conjunction with traditional healthcare to help promote balance in the body, mind, and spirit.

Is Reiki safe? 

Yes, Reiki is generally considered safe for people of all ages, including children, pregnant women, and even animals.

It is a gentle, non-invasive practice that is often used alongside traditional medical care in some hospitals and wellness settings to support relaxation and comfort before, during, and after medical treatments or procedures.

Reiki promotes a deep sense of relaxation and calm, which can be a helpful complement to conventional healthcare and overall well-being.

Can Reiki be done remotely?

Yes, Reiki can be performed at a distance (Distance Reiki) as energy work is not limited by physical proximity.

Is Reiki a religion? 

Reiki is not a religion. Reiki is spiritual in nature but is not tied to any specific religion or belief system. A Reiki practitioner connects with the universal energy that we all have within us, and channels that energy to the receiver offering a recharge of their own energy.
